Icarus Field Guide: Uplink EULA

Last updated: August 22, 2026

End User Licence Agreement

This End User License Agreement ("Agreement") governs your use of Icarus Field Guide: Uplink ("Uplink", formerly Icarus Server Manager, or the "Software"). By installing, copying, running, or using the Software, you agree to this Agreement. If you do not agree, do not install or use the Software.

1. License Grant

Uplink is proprietary freeware. You are granted a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the compiled Software for personal, non-commercial use on your own private ICARUS dedicated servers.

No rights are granted to the source code. The source code is private, proprietary, and owned by the developer.

2. Personal and Non-Commercial Use Only

You may use Uplink only for personal, non-commercial management of private ICARUS dedicated servers. Commercial use is not allowed. This includes, without limitation, use by paid game server hosts, use to provide paid hosting or server administration services, or bundling Uplink with any paid product or service.

3. Redistribution

You may redistribute the original, unmodified installer or release package. You may not modify, repackage, rename, rebrand, sell, rent, sublicense, host modified copies of, or remove notices from the Software.

4. Restrictions

You may not reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, modify, create derivative works from, bypass protections in, or attempt to extract source code from the Software, except where such restriction is prohibited by applicable law.

5. Donations

Donations are voluntary, non-refundable support for the developer. A donation is not a purchase and does not create a paid license, warranty, support obligation, ownership interest, special access, or additional rights in the Software.

6. User Responsibility

Uplink can install, configure, run, stop, restart, update, back up, restore, and automate ICARUS dedicated server files and processes. This includes editing files the dedicated server itself owns: its settings files, its ban list, its auto-admin list, and which world it loads or creates. Uplink can also rewrite a saved world directly, to rename it or to change its difficulty or hardcore setting, none of which ICARUS offers a way to change once a world exists. A saved world has no undo: Uplink takes a backup before it writes, and abandons the edit if it cannot. You are responsible for understanding the actions you take with the Software.

Uplink can take over an ICARUS dedicated server that is already running, whether or not Uplink started it, and can terminate ICARUS dedicated server processes belonging to the server installation it manages, including when Uplink itself is closed.

ICARUS provides no way to ask a running server to save on demand. Stopping or restarting the server can therefore lose progress made since the game's own last autosave. Uplink can hold a stop until the game's next autosave has been written, or until the last player has disconnected. Automated restarts always wait for a save; for stops and restarts you trigger yourself, you choose whether to wait. The wait for a save is bounded by a time limit you configure, and the stop proceeds when that limit expires whether or not a save has landed. The wait for the server to empty is not bounded by time and ends only when you cancel it.

You are responsible for backing up your ICARUS server files, saves, prospects, configuration, mods, and related data before using Uplink. You are also responsible for securing your admin passwords, API tokens, webhook URLs, SMTP credentials, S3 credentials, server files, operating system, firewall, router, and network.

Backup archives include your server configuration as well as your worlds. They therefore contain your in-game admin password in plain text and your auto-admin list. You are responsible for how you store, download, and share them.

If you expose the Uplink web portal outside your local network, you are responsible for securing it appropriately.

7. Third-Party Services and Dependencies

Uplink may interact with third-party software and services when relevant features are used, including ICARUS dedicated server files, SteamCMD, Steam services, GitHub releases, Discord, arbitrary webhooks, SMTP servers, Let's Encrypt, and S3-compatible storage. Those services are controlled by third parties, not by the developer of Uplink.

Your use of ICARUS, Steam, SteamCMD, hosting providers, cloud storage, messaging services, and other third-party services is subject to their own terms.

8. Data and Privacy

Uplink stores operational data locally beside the executable or in configured local paths. This may include configuration, logs, audit activity, metrics, backups, auth data, password hashes, remember-me token hashes, API token hashes, TOTP settings, and optional credentials or secrets.

Uplink does not ask for, use, or store your Steam account credentials. It downloads and updates the ICARUS dedicated server through SteamCMD's anonymous login, which requires no account.

Secrets Uplink does store, where you configure them, include your S3 secret key and your SMTP password. The S3 secret key is encrypted at rest with a key stored on the same machine, which protects it from casual inspection but not from anyone with access to that machine.

Uplink also records information about the players who connect to your server, including their in-game names, Steam IDs, and a history of their visits and playtime. This information is stored locally on your machine. You are responsible for how you retain, display, and share it, and for complying with any privacy or data-protection rules that apply to you. Player history can be deleted from within Uplink.

Uplink can assemble a diagnostics bundle for you to download and attach to a bug report. It contains Uplink's version, its current status, and its configuration with passwords and secrets removed. If you leave the logs option enabled, it also contains recent console output, which records player names and their join and leave times. The bundle is created only when you ask for it and is never sent anywhere by Uplink; whether to share it, and with whom, is your decision.

Uplink does not provide a general telemetry service. However, when you enable or use features that require outside services, Uplink may contact those services. This may include Steam or SteamCMD services for server downloads and updates, GitHub for release checks, Discord or webhooks for alerts, SMTP servers for email, Let's Encrypt for certificates, and S3-compatible storage for backup mirrors.

9. No Affiliation

Uplink is an unofficial tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or approved by RocketWerkz, ICARUS, Steam, or Valve. All trademarks, game names, service names, logos, and game assets belong to their respective owners.

10. No Warranty

The Software is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. The developer does not warrant that the Software will be error-free, secure, uninterrupted, compatible with future updates, or fit for any particular purpose.

Without limitation, the developer is not responsible for server downtime, data loss, corrupted saves or configuration, deleted or failed backups, failed restores, failed updates, SteamCMD issues, firewall or network exposure, account issues, mod conflicts, third-party service failures, security issues, or compatibility breaks caused by ICARUS, Steam, operating system, dependency, or network changes.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer will not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages arising from or related to the Software or this Agreement, even if the developer has been advised of the possibility of such damages.

12. Updates and Availability

The developer may update, change, suspend, or discontinue the Software at any time. The developer has no obligation to provide updates, fixes, support, compatibility updates, or response times.

Uplink can also update itself. When you check for updates, or enable the optional periodic check, Uplink contacts GitHub to look for a newer release, downloads it, and verifies it against its published checksum. Installing is never automatic: an update replaces the running program and restarts Uplink, which stops and restarts your game server, so it proceeds only when an administrator confirms it.

Separately, Uplink can install new ICARUS dedicated server builds through SteamCMD, automatically when you enable that option.

13. Termination

Your license terminates automatically if you violate this Agreement. Upon termination, you must stop using the Software and delete any copies in your possession.

14. Governing Law

This Agreement is governed by the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.

15. Entire Agreement

This Agreement is the complete agreement between you and the developer regarding the Software and supersedes any prior understandings about the Software.
